Explanation of Fluency
What: Reading Fluency is the ability to read with:
Why?: Students who are fluent readers are better able to devote their attention to comprehending the text. It is generally acknowledged that fluency is a critical component of skilled reading.
When? First- third Grade-ongoing observation, timed readings as needed to show growth.
- Accuracy-reader recognizes most words automatically with little effort.
- Expression:reader uses phrasing, tone and pitch so oral reading sounds conversational.
- Comprehension:refers to understanding of the text
- Appropriate Rate: refers to the speed of the reading. Determined by words per minute.
