Both grades have wrapped up our first math unit and will begin the second. 4th grade will start with multiplication with larger numbers and 3rd grade continues with multiplication. We will start the new units after Halloween.
We also completed our first S.S. unit on The Midwest and have begun our science unit on Energy. We did our first activity on heat energy and moving particles. Check out @mrshoehing3 on Twitter. The students really enjoyed it! They are completing their written part of the activity on Monday. Yes, I will be looking for all of our writing skills to be applied to their work.
In Reading, we are stretching lesson 6 into 2 weeks. We did take our comprehension test and as we complete the skills needed we will test. We are also working on our first Performance assessment in both grades. We are also working on our writing pieces with our
Writing Handbook.
Halloween is Tuesday! The entire school will have lunch from 11:30-12:30. The parade begins at 1 p.m. weather permitting. If there are any parents that want a class photo, after the parade we can meet outside our classroom windows. For the remainder of the day I have an activity planned for all the students.

Both grades completed a writing piece. Next week I am going to go over how a rubric works and what a useful tool it is. I am finding that the students know they are there, however are not using them.
Students are using schoology where they are getting their reading assignments. They are required to complete the assigned work in order to unlock the next days work. As they are doing this work, it allows me to pull small groups and focus in on our skills. If they are not doing what is expected, they will be using their recess to complete the work.
We did an independent run on our Lego cars and will be creating an assembly line to se the benefits of an assembly line. They watched a short video on the Model T being completed on the line.
Please practice multiplication facts! Both grades need to know these fluently! Third graders are still focusing on multiplication and fourth graders are working on subtraction with larger numbers. The next unit is multiplication with larger numbers. Each grade has a homework math practice packet that is due on Friday.

Thank you for all your help with the fun walk! We raised over $16,000 dollars! AMAZING!!!
3rd grade: We will continue to work on our multiplication and division math unit. Students are now beginning to see their fluency. Some need to work on facts and others on speed. Please continue to practice at home. There is a practice homework unit from Khan Academy on their schoology that they should be working on at home.
We just finished lesson 3 in our reading program. This unit focused on the essential question , "Why is volunteering good for a community and its people?" What a perfect tie in with our Fun Walk! For our writing portion we are working on personal narratives and the use of dialogue. The students are expected to use capitalization, sentence structure and add details. We learned how by using our senses this can help us. They are also adding transition words into their paragraphs. As always, neatness matters. If it is illegible, they will be asked to re-write their work.
4th grade:We are working on adding and subtracting larger numbers. We took a quick quiz on Friday and it appears that we need to review. This week as we start subtraction, we will also be working on addition. There will most likely be homework on schoology. It will be listed in their agendas. You will also be able to see this in their schoology account.
We just finished lesson 3 in our Journey's and our essential question was, "How are books and libraries important for people and communities?" In writing we are working on personal narratives and adding in details and dialogue to make our writing stronger. As always, neatness matters. If it is illegible, they will be asked to re-write their work.
S.S. We are getting ready to wrap up our unit on the Midwest Region. Students are finishing up a slide presentation and will need to submit it to me on 10/11. We will culminate with an activity on assembly lines and then take our test. They will need to know the states that are in the region and where they are located on the map. I have been practicing this with them on Kahoot.it, a really fun way to practice!
